1. What are Tax invoice and Bill of Supply documents under the GST regime?

- Under the GST regime, an Invoice or a Tax invoice refers to the article mentioned in section 31 of the CGST Act, 2017.
- This section mandates issuance of an invoice or a bill of supply for every supply of goods or services in the event of a supply trigger.
- It is not necessary that only the person supplying goods or services needs to issue an invoice.
- The GST law mandates that any registered person buying goods or services from an unregistered person needs to issue a payment voucher and a tax invoice.

2. What is e-invoicing?+

- E-invoicing under the GST network follows specific protocols to create a centralised e-invoicing platform for businesses in India.
- E-invoicing is a system in which invoices are authenticated electronically by GST Network (GSTN )for further use on the common GST portal.
- Under the proposed electronic invoicing system, an identification number is issued against each invoice by the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) to be managed by the GSTN.
- All invoice information is transferred from this portal to both the GST portal and e-way bill portal in real-time.

3. What type of documents are to be submitted to GST System?+

While the word invoice is used in place of e-invoice, it also covers other documents such as:
i. Invoice by Supplier
ii. Credit Note by Supplier
iii. Debit Note by Supplier
These documents must also be submitted to the IRP.

4. What is IRN?+

- An Invoice Reference Number (IRN) is a unique number (also known as hash) generated by the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) using a hash generation algorithm (SHA 256), under the new e-invoicing system.
- A string of IRN is 64 digits.
- For every document such as an invoice or debit or credit note to be submitted on the GST portal or e-way bill portal, an IRN is generated.
