Carbon fibers can be based on a high quality polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor, which is specifically engineered. PAN-based carbon fibers consist of 1,000 to 48,000 filaments, each with a diameter between 5 and 7 µm. Each filament has a micro graphite crystal structure. Together with resin, carbon fibers are usually manufactured into a composite. These carbon fiber components are light-weight and strong compared to parts made of metals (e.g. aluminum) or other fiber reinforced composites.
