Hot Rolled Coils are made by continuous rolling of steel at high temperature, generally over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The process involves passing metal sheets, produced from billets, through rollers above the metal’s (steel) recrystallization temperature. The metal sheets may be passed through the roller many times to achieve the desired dimension. During the cooling process, the hot rolled steel may reconfigure itself resulting in an end product that is more flexible and more loose as compared to the original product.  The hot rolled coils are manufactured without much delay in order to avoid the need for reheating the steel during the manufacturing. The entire process of manufacturing HR coils is known as hot rolling. As the steel cools off it automatically shrinks; usually it is not easy to predict the size and shape of the end product of a hot rolling.

Most of the time, the hot rolled coils also undergo a treatment called pickling, which basically helps in removing impurities and inorganic contaminants. The process involves passing the hot rolled steel through an acidic solution which helps in removing the surface oxides, and subsequently oiling the metal surface to make it corrosion-resistant.

The Coils are cut into a desired width by the process of slitting the coils, and the desired length by uncoiling the coils and cut them into a required length. Coils that is cut to length (CTL) is normally shipped flat-stacked and that is called as Sheets. Sheets are of different types like H.R Sheets, C.R Sheets, G.P Sheets, G.C Sheets etc

There are 3 types of Cold Rolled Steel

1. Cold Rolled Steel Coils (CR Coils): Cold Rolled (CR) coils are high grade steel products characterized by high strength and uniform thickness, with low ductability. Cold rolled coils are formed by cooling the hot rolled pickled product (cold process of steel) and passing them through a cold reducing mill to reduce the thickness and make the surface finish superior. These types of CR coils are ideal for automobiles – exposed and unexposed parts, power plants, industrial goods, and so on.
2. Cold Rolled Steel Plate (CR Plates): Cold Rolled (CR) Steel Plate is a flat steel product with fine quality surface finish and tighter tolerance. Such CR plates are manufactured by passing hot rolled steel through cold reduction mills to reduce thickness, followed by reheating at high temperatures (annealing). This combined process of cold rolling along with annealing, gives the resulting cold rolled plate high impact strength and superior concentricity, which can be put to good use in automobiles, electrical appliances, etc.
3. Cold Rolled Steel Sheets (CR Sheets): Cold Rolled (CR) Steel Sheets are fine grade steel products that possess superior surface finish and closer dimensional tolerance. These CR sheets are produced by passing hot rolled pickled steel product through a cold reducing mill (rolls).
